Murrin Murrin is a world-class hydrometallurgical project, utilising high-pressure acid leach technology to recover nickel and cobtalt from laterite ores. Minara's vision is to deliver high-quality products within budget and with the highest regard for its people, their safety and the environment.
Working with Communities
Minara's operations impact on a range of communities, both in the regions where its operations are located, and in the areas within which their employees live.
Consultation with stakeholders, including local community groups and government authorities, is an integral part of the way in which the company does business. Minara aims to ensure that communities are engaged and informed, particularly during the planning and development phases at its Murrin Murrin operations.
Minara's commitment to local communities encompasses sourcing local employees, services and suppliers. Minara provides training opportunities for current and new employees to attract and retain the highest quality workforce. Minara also provides in-kind and financial support for a range of community initiatives.
What is the Minara Community Foundation?
In an effort to enhance its community support, Minara has set up a community foundation - in partnership with Western Australian Community Foundation - for the long-term benefit of people in the northern goldfields. Launched in September 2007, the foundation will exist in perpetuity for local communities and future generations to benefit beyond the life of the mine.
The foundation will support projects that provide:
-
educational benefits;
-
economic, social, cultural and heritage benefits;
-
economic development, training and education opportunities;
-
transport and communication services;
-
programs and initiatives for future generations; and
-
protection for Indigenous culture.
How will grants be made?
Minara has made an initial contribution of $1 million to the foundation. In addition the company will commit an annual contribution of $250,000 per financial year over the next five years. The initial contribution to the foundation will be invested. The annual contribution plus a portion of the return on investment will be available as grants to the community.
Groups wishing to access funds will need to follow a formal application process. Further information can be found within the Grant Guidelines. Should you require further assistance, please contact Linda Back on (08) 9224 6060.
How will the Foundation be managed?
The Minara Community Foundation has been established under the umbrella of Western Australian Community Foundation. Western Australian Community Foundation is Trustee for the Minara Community Foundation. Working with Western Australian Community Foundation provides Minara and the local community with an independent body to oversee the governance and administration of the trust and its grant-making program.
A local advisory committee - made up of members from the northern goldfields community, industry and Minara - will liaise between the community and Western Australian Community Foundation, recommending programs and initiatives for support.
