History
Hon Tom Stephens MLA, as Minister for Local Government & Regional Development (2001 – 2004) was integral to the development of Western Australian Community Foundation through his proposal for the state government to commit to providing $100,000 to each of the nine (9) Regional Development Commissions across the state. The proposal was sponsored through Cabinet by then Vice Patron Hon Dr Geoff Gallop and in 2005 the state government announced that regional development commissions would receive an allocation of $100,000 each.
The specific purpose of these funds was for each Regional Development Commission to investigate the opportunities and potential for a community foundation in their region, under the trusteeship of Western Australian Community Foundation. These funds were made available in the 2005 / 2006 financial year through the Regional Development Scheme.
The Pilbara Development Commission established the Pilbara Community Foundation under the trusteeship of Western Australian Community Foundation to benefit local communities of the Pilbara region.
Western Australian Community Foundation has a structure that encompasses local advisory committees made up of community volunteers who make recommendations regarding the distribution of funds in their community. This model ensures local input and participation.
